I do get frustrated with the “Not in My Back Yard” (NIMBY) brigade. According to an article in last week’s Oxford Mail, there is a plan to build a solar energy farm a short way south of Oxford and, predictably, there is a group of local residents claiming the “£20m Solar Scheme Would Be Just Like a Prison Camp”. Really? The impression I get is that the security fence, necessary to prevent theft and avoid danger to the public, will be topped with cameras but will be screened with a high hedge; not really such an eyesore and far less of an encumbrance than building a traditional power station.

I hope they didn’t fritter away any electricity printing their banners and that they have an answer to the question of whose backyard should be used instead.
