I am quite pleased with this, which I was working on at the Summer School today:

Abstract Image of Paintbrushes

Paintbrushes

It has come on a long way from where it sat yesterday:

Abstract paintbrushes (image rotated to the left)

Paintbrushes? (unfinished)

The rotation is intentional as, in yesterday’s version, I was considering working on it this way round to try and break away from the obvious reading of the key shapes. The transformation came when we were able to introduce some new colours to our palette. I had done a little more painting with the previous selection (Phthalo Blue, Burnt Sienna and Raw Umber) but washes with Indian Yellow and Warm Orange created a vivid intensity that I loved.

I’m glad I didn’t give up on this one, although I’m aware that the other rule about painting – particularly with watercolour – is knowing when to stop and I think I may now have arrived at this place with something that feels that it could be finished.
