Back and Ready to Kick Bottom

I’m back! Did you miss me? Probably not but it has been good to take a short break from blogging as there has been plenty else packed into the past couple of weeks and all sorts of things I could jump into writing about. However, warming up, I’ll briefly comment on the film I watched last night, Kick-Ass 2.

I’ve always enjoyed superhero stories and most of them have made an impressive transition from comic book pages to the silver screen now that CGI can routinely conjure up awesome effects. I’d been a bit hesitant about the Kick-Ass franchise though as it it looked to be violent and rude. I spotted that Kick-Ass 2 was available on Netflix so decided it was time to check it out.

I think my expectations were fulfilled on all counts. It was an impressive action film and, yes, it wasn’t family-friendly viewing. I enjoyed most of it but wouldn’t rush to watch it again. However, I did think that the reflections on what it means to be a hero were interesting. None of the characters are super-powered in the comic book sense, or at least not the Superman level of things; it’s all training and willing. I reckon it could have dialled back on the violence and bad language and become more widely acceptable although, like the kinds of teenagers and other rebels it depicts, it would still struggle against the truth that it makes self-evident – in real life, your actions have consequences both for yourself and others.
