Gig Review: Sara Groves

Last night’s gig was excellent. Not only did we get Sara on piano, but it turned out that she was accompanied by bass and percussion. I was a bit dismayed by the quality of the sound in the first song (very boomy, probably as a consequence of the fascinating architecture of the venue, St James in Gerrards Cross) but the engineer soon got that under control so that we could hear the beauty of each part and carefully crafted lyrics for each tune.

Sara played a lot of songs from the two slightly older albums that Jane and I have as well as some newer material. While not having quite the layered depth of the recorded versions, this was more than made up for by her excellent stage presence, introducing and drawing us into the stories behind the songs. Apparently this was her first tour of the UK; I would definitely love an opportunity to hear her again in future.
