Yesterday I was at a team day organised by one of the research groups at work. It was run down at Balliol College; I am very familiar with its Broad Street façade, which I have passed many times, but have never been inside before. I had not appreciated how far back it stretches. Beyond the small quadrangle that is visible through the gate and past the porter’s lodge is a much larger open area surrounded by college buildings.
The day was great, particularly wandering round Oxford in the afternoon hunting down answers to a quiz (the first time I’ve put my Latin skills to work in this phase of my career!). However, the highlight was definitely a chance to step through the gate and into the hidden world of Balliol College.
