I got my first taste of my mild brew yesterday; very pleasing. It was dark and tasty, neither too fizzy nor too bitter. Out of interest, I took a gravity reading, which came out as 1.014 at 20.5ºC, which is higher than when I put it in the bottles (when it measured 1.014 at the same temperature). I had expected that it would be slightly lower, with the small sugar addition converted to alcohol. There was definitely some carbonation to prove the remnants of the yeast had been at work. Whatever the science of it (and it could be as simple as a measuring error somewhere — it is hard to read the hydrometer with froth at the top of the sample!), it is a good tasting beer and one I may try again.
