This is one of my contributions for St Clement’s entry in this year’s Oxfordshire Artweeks event. I sketched the pattern on an old piece of plywood (the other side is the 1970s style faux-wood cladding that came with my sitting room; not quite the style I want so it is being removed) and then used my soldering iron to etch the design in. Burning in a pattern is the art of pyrography.
The compass (about 3′ square) will sit outside the church all week, so it needed to be waterproof; I am rather pleased with the result and so will probably find a home for it in my garden after that.
