Sue Mingus conducts an ongoing campaign against the sale of illegal bootlegs of material by her late husband, Charlie Mingus (jazz bassist and composer). In a twist, she is releasing what she considers to be the best of these recordings on a new label called Revenge Records, which has recently put out the album Revenge!.
One of the tracks, Fables of Faubus, is available for almost-free download; all you have to do is post a tweet or mention it on Facebook. That’s not a bad price for 25 minutes of jazz genius! I am not overly keen on the subversion of Twitter for commercial ends but I do sympathise with the issue of others making a living by selling unofficial recordings.
All power of course to those artists who encourage the recording and free distribution of their gigs (eg. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones who encourage audience recording at many of their gigs)!
