Yesterday I finished re-reading Devices and Desires by P D James, which features Adam Dalgliesh (one of my special agents selection). Last time I read it, I remember being quite disappointed (so much so that I had forgotten the title, hence picking it up again); for some reason, I enjoyed the book more this time.
Why was that? I suspect it is because I had some recollection of certain events that seemed rather fantastical for this genre of fiction and took the edge of my enjoyment on an earlier read. Now I had the pleasure of gradually remembering ahead of time and also seeing how later surprises were carefully prepared well ahead of time.
I still don’t rate it as one of her best novels in the Dalgliesh series but was pleased to find that we got on better on meeting again.
