I read a lot of books but not much poetry. I check a stream of fiction and non-fiction out of the library but never, as far back as I can remember, a book solely devoted to poems. Thus starved, I appreciate it when some of the blogs I read give me a dose of liquid, thought-feeding words.
I mentioned in passing in December how I planned to use a Betjeman poem noted by Maggi Dawn as part of the reflections at our church carol service (in fact, when I reran the service for my family on Christmas Day, we replaced the sermon with a whole mix of poems drawn from our various sources). Here are some others that have caught my eye recently:
- Last week, Hugo Schwyzer shared an excerpt from W H Auden’s For the Time Being
- This morning, he added another thought-provoking piece of verse to his regular Thursday poetry slot: T S Eliot’s Journey of the Magi
- A third Christmas-flavoured (or should that be Christmas-flavouring?) poem, this time published by it’s author, John Frye: Other Christmas Mothers
Although many have taken down the tinsel, there is still a little way to run before the twelve days of Christmas are up. Do you have any seasonal poems that have caught your imagination?
