Wine Review – Viognier Collection 2006 Gérard Bertrand

I didn’t take notes on all the wines I drank over Christmas and a couple were picked out from favourites I have discovered in my recent series of wine review (both of which provided the expected satisfaction) but I do have a couple of further reviews lined up. Here is the first:

Viognier Collection 2006 Gérard Bertrand, Vin de Pays d’Oc

Rating: 4.5/5

A pale wine with a similar brassy colour to the pinot grigio I was so struck by last month, I found this viognier to have a subtle scent that reminded me of honeysuckled hedgerows.

That was pleasant enough but the taste was not merely pleasant but inspiring; a rich blend of hazelnut and peach but with a sharp enough edge to hold its own against strongly flavoured foods. I am not quite ready to concede the title of “favourite white” over my beloved albariño but viognier is a strong contender, especially for contexts where albariño’s bite against salty seafood is not needed or where guests might want something a little gentler on the palette.

I definitely intend to try more wines built on this grape.

Majestic say:

Pale yellow in colour, with intense aromas of white flowers. The palate is rich and lush with tropical fruits, dried apricots, hazelnuts and honey.
