Adrian Astor on Trumpet

I am back to life as a webmaster this morning after a long weekend of being a musician. I feel reasonably awake at the moment but it is going to be a test of endurance to stay alert this afternoon!

Yesterday’s gig, with The Adrian Astor Quintet, went very well. I thought we sounded good on Saturday afternoon but easily topped that yesterday. We were playing at Woodcote Park Golf Club as they held their yearly celebration to welcome in new club captains. There wasn’t as much shade as I had anticipated in the area the band was set up, so I am glad I remembered to drop some high-factor suncream in my bag!

It was a long event, with several sets of music (both performing and a chance to fit in some rehearsal of newer tunes) fitted in between noon and about 6pm. However, we were well treated (I think it is the first gig I’ve done with a complimentary tab at the bar) and being out in the sun making music and relaxing is a good way to pass an afternoon.

This weekend, I also managed to get some pictures of the group, which you can see on my Flickr account. The one shown here was my favourite, showing Adrian Astor on trumpet. I was experimenting with my recently acquired Nikon E-Series 50mm f/1.8 lens; with a very open aperture, it has a narrow depth of field, allowing me to position the zone of sharpness halfway down the trumpet. This brings the viewer right into the heart of where the music is made which, after all, is what the live jazz experience is all about.
