Bat Watching

If I’m going to do a daily, directly painted watercolour and blog about it, that means I need to do some painting about the other things I’ve done so I can write about them. On Sunday we stayed in bed in the morning and did our walk in the evening, visiting the bathaus shortly before 10pm.

As hoped, we saw some bats but they move so rapidly that you only get an impression of them. I tried to capture that in the painting – I think we saw possibly three different bats but it was hard to tell so, if you look, you can see three dark silhouettes in this piece.

My palette was burnt sienna and ultramarine blue, enhanced with some lemon yellow. I also made use of a hair dryer so that, within a reasonable timeframe, I could do some work lifting and shifting pigments but also some additional glazing to bring the piece together.
