More Than One Note Going On

I remember hearing ukemaster James Hill playing Billie Jean on solo ukulele when he did a show at The Jam Factory in Oxford about three years ago. He managed to combine the bassline, chords and drums on his ukulele (no loopers involved) and sing over the top. Mesmerising and jaw dropping. If you want to see and hear it, there are plenty of videos online and I have watched a bunch of them since witnessing it live.

This morning, I discovered a slightly simpler video of him using the same tricks on the jazz standard One Note Samba:

By simpler, I just mean that he isn’t singing at the same time; it is still a study in ukulele mastery. I wonder if this piece came first though – I can’t find any recordings of Billie Jean that go this far back.
