On Saturday evening I’m playing in a scratch jazz group as part of the Music for a Summer Evening event at St Nicholas, Marston. It’s a free event (6-8pm) and the group is playing some songs in the first half and then backing a choir performing Chilcott’s Nidaros Jazz Mass in the second part. There are also some other choir pieces and some classical ensembles too.
Last night we did a rehearsal with the choir at the church and then a run through the other songs afterwards. The complication with that was that the bell ringers were doing their thing at the same time. It wasn’t that loud but, when you are relying on listening to judge what to play, it is quite challenging to keep time while bell rounds are pealing out in the background.
We got there though so, despite the campanologists, I think we’re ready for Saturday evening.
