Jane was watching a documentary on the Bay City Rollers this evening while I was doing some more work on my assignment. I am a bit young (just!) to have particularly noticed them at the height of their fame and, by the time I was beginning to become aware of the pop charts, they were a fading memory (their last charting single in the UK was 1977). You could probably play me their top hits and I’d struggle to name the artist.
I’d finished work for the evening towards the end of the programme and it struck me that, while their time in the spotlight was intense it was short and not all of the members ended up staying the course as musicians. Even bands who stand in the full glare of the spotlight rarely last. I am heartily glad that there is so much more to the music scene than just this highly distorted, commercial part of it.
