I’ve been doing some reworking of a tune I originally wrote for The Pico Brown Five about ten years ago. I pulled it out of the archives earlier this summer for The String Project but, although the first reworking was okay it is a very different kind of group. With the Five, I just needed a lead sheet and we would happily loop round, creating the song afresh with improvisation; to make the most of the Project, I realised that it needed a bit more arrangement.

I suspect there will be further iterations but I’ve now got something a bit more structured, including the “overture” I had been threatening. Logic Pro X has continued to prove an excellent tool for composition. In particular, the ‘drummer’ tool helped give the feel and stop this version feeling too mechanical, although I’m looking forward to hearing how Pieman (literally) breathes his inspiration into the part with his beatboxing. I think it is time to dust off my music engraving tools (the fabulous Lilypond) and knock up scores for the band.
