Brave plant of the year award, at least in my garden heats, goes to Echinacea purpurea:
This perennial flower has recently come into bloom but what this view doesn’t show you is the damage is suffered earlier in the year:
Here you can see the lower stalk, which has suffered a lot of nocturnal nibbling, probably from slugs and snails. For a long while, I thought I wasn’t going to get any flowers this year but the plants have rallied and are now putting on a display. When they set seed, I will collect the results and see if I can get a much larger batch growing next year to give insurance against similar problems.
