This morning’s service at church was probably my last public performance of Christmas carols for the year so I’m pleased that the selection included a couple of my favourites.
Good King Wenceslas is arguably outside the range of what could be called a worship song but is a cracking tale with a strong message about social responsibility at the end. God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen depends very much on the placement of that comma. It isn’t a call for tipsy people to have a sleep but a joyous celebration of God’s comfort for those who have been delighting in the celebration of the birth of Christ.
My last public performance of the year but perhaps there will be time to squeeze in a few more favourites from the seasonal songbook before the year is out.
