What is this? A healthy, mature radish. I have only ever thought of radishes as a crop grown for a small, edible, bulbous root but I left one of the plants in this bed to go to see. It just kept growing and growing, putting on a long display of pretty, pink-tinged white flowers gradually now being replaced with swelling seedpods. What is more, the pods are edible: crisp, mild and juicy.
Following on from this experiment, I am inclined to let radishes go to seed more often. The only drawback is that the plant (grown from a tiny seed planted earlier this year) takes up quite a lot of space but what a great way to fill a spare corner!
