You can see the two new plants (along with the recently completed compost bin for scale) above. I am looking forward to these getting established over the next few months and looking great by next summer.
The Sambucus (Elder) will produce edible flowers and berries and, apparently, should have a positive influence on the fermentation of the compost (Philbrick H. and Gregg R. B. Companion Plants. Watkins 1979. Quoted on the Plants for a Future site). The Lonicera (Honeysuckle) is more ornamental but, as well as enhancing the appearance of the privet hedge, should also encourage a lot more beneficial insects with its nectar and mask the compost with its scent.
