$700 Billion?

Commentary on the proposed plan to come up with $700 billion to bail out the US economy is a hot topic across the blogsphere. It does strike me that having a problem that means such a solution is even contemplated suggests the economic system is fundamentally flawed to begin with.

My two favourite posts are on Subversive Influence, which notes Archbishop Sentamu’s insightful comment that a mere $5 billion would be enough to save the lives of six million children and that world governments can no longer say they can’t afford that, and Robert Cringley’s suggestion that the US government should ban the manufacture and sale of incandescent bulbs. That wouldn’t avoid recession, which is perhaps inevitable and long overdue, but would cause an approximate reduction of 18% in US energy demands, which would be fantastic for the medium term prospects of the economy (and environment).

So, those are the kind of things I like to read when I’m not taking pictures of myself!
