Taking photos of fish can be frustrating because the light reflected on the surface of the water causes the image to become washed out. One way to fix this is to invest in a polarising filter, which can block out reflected light. Another is to use post processing to increase the contrast.

Not having a polarising filter, the latter is what I did for the photograph above, which I took on a recent trip to the gardens at RHS Rosemoor. The speckles look like I have applied a grungy texture, which is a popular processing meme, but are in fact 100% natural, being the flecks of dirt floating on top of the water.

The result is a very vivid image. I have sized it to a 4:3 aspect ratio and look forward to it appearing in the rotation on my desktop wallpaper.
