Another review of one of the wines I picked up in Marks and Spencer a while ago.

Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie (2007)

A pale, lemony yellow which turns to shining brass as it catches the light, this was a relatively unremarkable specimen of pinot grigio wine. The description on the bottle conjures up citrus delights but, on my first encounter, the less poetic phrase “mildly acidic” came to mind. That is not to denigrate it as a choice to accompany food but it did not strike me as a wine to savour on its own.

However, it did have a surprise in store. I normally take two or three days to get through a bottle of wine unless we have company. Some wines are definitely better on the first day but this bottle saved the best till last. After a couple of days in the fridge, the final glass was still fresh and sharp but also infused with a wonderfully buttery sensation. A weak start but a strong finish.

This wine was so exclusive to Marks and Spencer that I couldn’t even find it on their website but the back of the bottle says:

A fruity, ripe, top-quality example of the popular Italian wine Pinot Grigio. This wine has wonderfully fresh zesty flavours of lemon and lime and a tangy, dry finish.
