There has been some discussion of the picture I published on Monday. Originally I identified it as wheat but I have been won round to the view that it is probably barley instead.
Identification was not as easy as I had hoped. Despite various searches I failed to find an image that neatly contrasted images of wheat, barley and other kinds of cereal.
One of the correspondents, Chansiaux, presented a convincing argument about the number of grains which I could see hints of when I searched for other wheat and barley pictures on Flickr (allowing that they may often be confused). Therefore, I have renamed the pictures to identify them as barley.
Are any of my readers cereal experts who can shed more light on the problem?
