Bus in Motion

One of the photographic techniques that was impossible on my Fujifilm Finepix camera was adjusting the shutter speed. This could be influenced by switching to macro mode for a slightly slower speed but was otherwise automatic.

On my Nikon D40, I can have any shutter speed from faster than a speeding bullet to half a minute or more. I was taking some pictures of a local building a couple of weekends ago, across the other side of a relatively busy road, and it struck me that something large like a bus might make an interesting effect with a low shutter speed; the result is shown here.

I probably could not have taken the picture on a brighter day but the overcast setting was ideal. Half a second was enough for the London bus to become a blur of colour, making a pleasing effect.
