The Review
It has to be said that this album rocks! The graphics on the front cover suggest that this is going to be one long groovy party and that would be a pretty good summary. After all, if you put together some of the top musicians and worship leaders in the field of contemporary rock-orientated worship with thousands of passionate young adults who’ve travelled from far and wide to praise God and learn more about glorifying his name, you have a sure-fire recipe for high-energy results.
What is not to like? You won’t like it you hate electric guitars, stonking beats or the sound of people having fun. There are quieter, reflective passages but there is much more exuberant enjoyment and celebration going on.
While my tongue is firmly in cheek, it is worth recognising that going to an event with this kind of music is likely to make you much more susceptible to whatever teaching follows. However a bigger problem for most worship groups is likely to be working out how to translate the songs that have grabbed them from the CD into something that is feasible given their line-up, talent and congregation (I don’t think you could make Chris Tomlin’s Party with any less than 1000 people ready to jump and shout, although, to be fair, I don’t think it pretends to be one of the most theologically insightful tracks).
Overall, I think it provides a fantastic and inspiring collection of worship; what’s more you could certainly put it on the player at a party, serving both those who want to rock and those who might want to stop and mull over the lyrics.
Standout Tracks
Glorious (We Lift Our Hands to Praise You): This is one we’ve recently started doing at church, where we used a version on another CD to get us going. That is probably why it stood out to me; if you recognise any of the tracks on this CD, you probably haven’t heard them quite like this before.
Jesus Paid It All (I Hear the Saviour Say): An old hymn reworked for a modern band, including an additional chorus. This kind of thing won’t necessarily please the wheezy organ brigade but will help younger generations get in touch with riches from the Christian songbook down through the ages (listen also to I Stand Amazed and the use of Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus as the coda of Centre, which come later on the album).
