Yesterday afternoon I took a trip to see The Da Vinci Code. In brief, not as bad as I’d expected based on the mauling it has received from the critics but not a particularly noteworthy film.
Watching did give me some time to reflect on the overall story. I think the real weakness is not the history – that’s demonstrably false but it is, after all, clearly a work of fiction. The real failing is that the story doesn’t present any real hope: for two thousand years a secret society has kept an important truth hidden and it turns out to be, in its present incarnation, a woman who has nothing in particular to offer the world except that, allegedly, she is descended from various important historical figures.
Big deal! I think I’ll stick with trusting Jesus…
