Hathern Open Mic – July 2026

Since around the start of this year, the Hathern Club has been hosting regular open mic evenings but I keep on finding they are on evenings when I have other things on. Finally I was able to make it along tonight. I was a little surprised not to see anyone I knew from the local music community (perhaps a sign that I haven’t made enough connections) and it was rather loud (regretted not bringing my hearing protection) but it was fun overall.

I did a set of three songs using my Ibanez five string. I started with Holding Out For a Hero, then I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to Be Free and closed with Proud Mary. It wasn’t really a folk crowd so I decided not to try Santiago which was my original choice for a third song; Proud Mary still gave a sing-along element. It seemed to go pretty well and gives me some ideas for what is likely to go down well if I get another chance to get there.

I was also invited to join an impromptu blues group for a bit of a jam – easy territory for me and so a bit of fun.
