Looking back at my blog, I see that we had a frozen goose from Lidl in October 2020. This isn’t a very belated follow up. Honestly, I can’t remember much about how it turned out although I know we had cubes of goose fat in the freezer for sometime afterwards, which we gradually worked through. They’ve had more in the freezer recently so we picked up another, which we cooked last night.
That gave us a meal for two last night, another meal for two this lunch time and we’ll get more from it yet. Probably at least one more meal along with a bag of bits to freeze and get out for the Boxing Day cold meat luncheon. That’s not to mention the stock (a couple of litres in the slow cooker now and bits to make the same again) and the fat (the first icecube tray full is in the freezer now). It still makes it a luxury meat but not too expensive once all the portions have been worked out.
As a note to self though, it is an investment of time for cooking it. It probably took me three hours to get it to the table (partly due to going carefully) and it felt like I was clearing up for at least an hour afterwards. In frozen form it looked quite petite but, defrosted and unwrapped, it was clear just how large it was. At the end of the evening, we got all the leftovers fitted in the fridge but only just!
I would cook again but would definitely want to approach with care.
