Here is my first sketch of the year, done when Jane and I were walking along part of the Ridgeway path in Oxfordshire on New Year’s Day:
I was struck by the various forms in the hedgerow we were walking past and decided to concentrate on three varieties, picked out in orange, brown and grey. These aren’t entirely natural colours but, as an artistic device, it serves to separate them. I finished the piece by adding a light scribble with the grey felt tip, graduated darker to lighter from top to bottom in the empty space, and then washing over it with a wet brush to add a subtle tone (and also some water at the bottom to add a light wash of orange).
