My experiences of exhibitions at Modern Art Oxford have felt like more miss than hit. That said, I found myself quite drawn into the present display – Penny Woolcock: Fantastic Cities.
That is my sketch, inspired by one of the many video pieces on display. Eight people are displayed, reading extracts from Thomas More’s Utopia while audio and visual focus switches between them. An interesting piece and a reminder of just how startlingly modern More’s ideas sound (certainly when selected down to short soundbites). You watch it in the dark so I was largely drawing blind and also experimenting with a different style of shading rather than the long-line cross hatching I normally fall back on.
I might try to make a few more trips before it closes in March next year – because most of the pieces are in video format, you really need time to watch them at least once through to get the full effect.
