Youth are hard

No, keep reading. Here is a poem I saw sprayed on the side of the Tesco Metro store in East Oxford this morning:

Youth are hard
Wired for
Hope

Is that layout part of the (self-declared) poem? It might just be an exigency of the width of the wall although I felt it broke up the words in a thought-provoking way.

Is it true? It would be lovely if it was more universally manifest in young people, who seem to be suffering an unprecedented epidemic of depression in the West. On the other hand, I think there is something about hope being a deep-seated part of what it means to be human, young or old. Often misplaced or squashed but hope is part of what we are.
