I’ve been doing some bassline transcription over the past couple of days to finish getting ready for a party tonight. All the music is straightforward pop… except that, when you get down to listening in detail, there are more subtle details than you might expect.

For example, I never realised before that Jive Talking by the Bee Gees, a classic disco era song, has got some 7/4 passages in it (listen to the two synth breaks). So much for disco music being simple… but those kind of details – not complex for the sake of showing off but enough to give some variety – make a world of difference. I wonder just how many other bits like that exist in songs I think I know well?
