Tomorrow night is my next outing on double bass with The String Project for a gig at East Oxford Community Centre. Actually I’m down for double duty, also backing up a blues duo for a few tunes at the start of the evening. It’s a good span of my musical abilities, from things that are carefully written down where I’ve had to work hard to learn how to play them to tunes that I’m busking on the basis of some sketchy chords and a few short practices. The latter is definitely much more in my comfort zone although it’s fascinating that what I can do without breaking a sweat (at least from stress – the upright still demands quite a physical effort) would complete phase players who would have no problems running through the kinds of scores that have had me putting in my woodshed hours.
The gig starts at 8pm (with the blues set) and will run on until approaching 11pm, with multiple short sets from a number of groups. Admission is £6 on the door and, if you do come along, pop over to say hello. If you’re on Facebook, then take a look at the event page, which includes some videos from previous gigs (although with a slightly different line-up for the band) and the chance to see who else is going and put your name down.
