After a week of -ing titles, it was about time I picked a different word, so how about thigmomorphogenesis. What does it mean? The way plants respond to tactile stimuli in their environment, like this mallow (Malva sylvestris) growing by our side gate:
Normally the plant would be over 5′ tall but, growing in a crack by the side gate, it has adapted to the opening and closing of the door. I find it rather charming and actually quite useful to stop the door banging back and forth if I am working outside and the wind is up. Hurrah for thigmomorphogenesis!
