The mutability of English is perhaps its greatest strength although, FWIW, I normally compose my text messages as short messages with traditional spelling and only the merest smattering of coded phrases. Mind you, I’m also the type of person who often manages to hit 140 characters precisely when I tweet directly so I have no doubt that I’m in a linguistic minority!
