A Visit to the Smithy

This morning I took a trip towards Swindon to visit the ancient monument Wayland’s Smithy. There isn’t a huge amount to see there but it is fascinating to be in a place that was of importance to much earlier inhabitants of these islands (the burial mound is estimated to be about 5,500 years old).

It is a longstanding mark on the land but there was also evidence that making a mark is an enduring human trait. The mound is surrounded by a number of old beech trees into which many people have carved their names. Some are clearly recent but you can see older ones stretching up the trunk and becoming increasingly mellowed with age.

Some things never change.
