Following on from Tuesday’s post, I found the following quote from the Wallander book I am reading at the moment (The Fifth Woman) to be wonderfully to the point:
Linda was pouring herself some tea and suddenly asked him why it was so difficult to live in Sweden.
“Sometimes I think it’s because we’ve stopped darning our socks,” Wallander said.
The Fifth Woman by Henning Mankell (Vintage, London, 2009), p297
His point is that Sweden had become a throw-away society, changing moral values. One of the problems of trying to pretend that you can throw things away, of course, is that There’s No Such Thing As Away (soundtrack from Steve Lawson).
