I took a free, online UK citizenship test and failed, with a mere 13 out of 24 correct answers. I have to admit that I did not do any particular study in preparation but it still surprises me that, as someone who is relatively literate and well-informed, native to the UK, a citizen by birth and who has well over thirty years experience of living here, I did not do better.
From the feedback I have picked up via Twitter and Facebook it sounds like most of my fellow UK citizens have the same problem. In fact, the only person who felt a touch more confident was a Kiwi friend who recently passed an official test (and even he did not sound convinced that he would pass if he retook it!).
Does this really mean that we are all abject failures as citizens or could it be that the people who devised the questions never actually passed their “Setting Sensible Tests” examination?
