Don’t Eat the Marshmallow

Here is an interesting video from TED. An experiment was done with young children to see how many could be left in a room with a marshmallow without eating it for fifteen minutes on the promise that they would then be given two marshmallows. Predictably, most failed. The interesting part was when the children were followed up as they entered adulthood — those who had the self-discipline to put of an immediate reward for a future promise were doing well while many of those who couldn’t resist instant gratification were in trouble, one way or another.

It is a great illustration although not, I think, an entirely unprecedented gleaning of wisdom. Patience is an invaluable virtue!
