Future of Web Design 2007

/ 5It was worth getting up early yesterday and subjecting myself to the commuter experience in order to attend the Future of Web Design event. I came away with several pages of notes mind-mapped out and a number of ideas to test in the context of my own web development work.
It wasn’t, however, such a revelatory experience as the similar Future of Web Apps conference I attended last year. In part, that is because I am better informed about the streams of web development I am interested, having developed my blog roll to include a number of technical feeds that keep me abreast of news and ideas.
Also, many of the presentations clustered around the idea of creating a “user experience”, often with the end goal of improved marketing. I am not sold on the idea of selling people things they do not need (although some of the examples were about campaigns with more worthy aims than just shifting products). I am more interested by concepts like microformats and mash-ups (both barely mentioned) than by building “cool”, immersive presentation-rich, content-lite sites.
All in all, worth attending but not such a rich experience as it could have been for this user.
