Blood Red Moon

Link to Picture

Tonight is due to see a total lunar eclipse in the UK (my source for the news was The Register, via John Pettigrew’s blog). The earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon and so our orbiting satellite is lit only by light reflected from the earth.

The exact appearance depends on the state of the earth’s atmosphere but it is likely to be some portentous blood red shade!

The lens on my Nikon D40 is only the 18-55mm one that comes with the basic kit and, as you can see by clicking on the picture, is not really quite enough to get close to something as distant as the moon. However, maybe I will give it a try if the skies are clear tonight, even if am more likely to end up with a red smudge than some of the excellent images that can be seen on the Wikipedia article about lunar eclipses.
