The reason I was busy this weekend, and thus looking for easy ways to blog, was because I was also involved in several things at church, including running the carol service. I am pleased to report that it went very well; I am looking forward to listening back the sermon I gave once it reaches our online archive as, despite being one of my least-prepared messages of the year, I felt it came out as one of the most fresh and spontaneous.

Perhaps the truth is that preparation is more than sitting down, looking up references and making notes. Living life, thinking thoughts and remembering to jot down some reminders from time to time is just as important if your mission is to talk about living a life pleasing to God rather than lecturing on the finer points of biblical hermeneutics and other theological tidbits.

I am preaching again on New Years Eve, so need to start the process of listening for inspiration once again. My first gleaning of possible material appeared as I commented on an entry on The Cartoon Blog, where I said:

There is also the issue that what people say they believe or even think they believe is often belied by the choices they make in living their lives. Ticking boxes is easy; being a disciple is an ongoing discipline.

That probably involves too much playing with words (believe / belie; disciple / discipline) to use directly without sounding smug but I’m making notes because what I say and do and hear and experience over the next fortnight will be grist to the mill for my next message.
