We finally got round to trying purple carrots with our dinner yesterday; Jane had found a reduced-price pack when she was shopping on Friday. As I understand it, this is an earlier variant but people preferred the orange colour and so selective breeding gradually altered our perceptions of the right colour for this root.
I’m glad we tried the experiment as they were delicious. Initially they are a deep purple colour on the outside and orange inside; on cooking, the whole carrot went almost black but the flesh was soft and relatively sweet. If I had eaten it unawares I probably would have guessed that it was some form of sweet potato.
Purple carrots have definitely got onto the list of vegetables that I would like to try growing at home (to get round the normal price tariff that comes with their “unusual” nature).
