Jane and I had a surprise on our way to church yesterday morning. After the strong winds in mid-January we had noticed a crack in the ground near the base of this tree but, yesterday, we discovered it had fallen over.

The only visible damage seemed to be to the tree; walls and windows looked okay. I hope it gets replaced though; the trees lining the local streets make a significant contribution to the environment and it will be much more drab without them.

I thought the tree had blossomed early but perhaps it somehow knew its time was up and was making a last desperate attempt to propagate itself (or, more romantically, to go out in a cloud of beauty).
