I think I may have discovered why, despite a “slug pub” and a slug-eating carnivorous plant (Sarracenia purpurea), my lettuce seedlings were still getting chomped. When I popped out to check last night, I discovered a nocturnal caterpillar.

Unfortunately I was too late to stop it chomping through the base of another seedling but let us just say that neither half is likely to repeat the crime!
