Look to the skies (or don’t…)

Apparently there is a fair amount of rapture fever going around at the moment with a swathe of people predicting that Jesus is either going to return or at least sweep his faithful out of the way of a pending period of tribulation sometime between 22/23 September 2025. By the time you read this, I am very confident that all of them will have been proved wrong and sad to think that a lot of other people will have been disappointed by their empty promises.

Why am I so confident? Part of it is the lessons of history. Plenty of people have made similar predictions in the past and those have all fallen flat. For example, you can read about the Great Disappointment of 1844. Further back in time, there were plenty of rumours stirring as 1666 approached, or the year 1000AD and probably around 666 as well. Going the other directions, the Jehovah’s Witnesses have notoriously made several predictions, eventually claiming that Jesus made an invisible return. That’s a cop out that others are likely to be repeating round about now! More recently still, I remember a spate of excitement around the late 1980s; I read some of the books, found it quite intriguing and then found that life moved on with every sign that all the careful calculations had been worked out in error.

Not inconsequentially, there is also what the Bible teaches. Jesus spoke on the subject several times, indicating that no-one knows the day or the hour except for God the Father and that his return would come “like a thief in the night”. You would be a pretty unsuccessful thief if YouTube preachers rumbled all your plans by announcing them online! Meanwhile, Paul reassures the Thessalonian church (as far as we can tell, afflicted by a very early burst of Millennial fever) that they don’t need to hold a fear of missing out because it will be a day that no-one will be able to miss.

There are likely to be a few more waves of predictions over the next few years because we are approaching the 2,000th anniversary of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Next time you hear one, it is worth looking for what that person has said about previous claims and also thinking about what grounds you have for trusting them more than Jesus himself!

Chicken Parmigiana

Chicken Parmigiana is a recipe I’ve been aware of for quite a while but which I don’t remember trying. Yesterday, we had a couple of chicken breasts defrosted for dinner and a lot of “waste” left from my concentrated tomatoes, which was enough to prompt me to give it a go.

I think this was the recipe I started with although, not having mozzarella on hand, I was immediately in improvising territory. I started with the tomato base – skins, pips and some garlic and celery mixed in. That went in the oven while I turned to the next task, preparing the chicken. I’ve had a slice of toast kicking around in the bread bin for a while and, since it didn’t show any signs of mould, I cut it up into chunks and blitzed it in a coffee grinder to produce a fine crumb. I sliced up the chicken, dipped it in a whipped egg and then breaded it with the crumb. That went into hot oil to be fried until turning golden on the outside (in batches). I also used my mandoline to get a pile of fine slices of Parmigiano Reggiano, an authentic parmesan cheese.

By this point, the tomato mix was hot. I took half of it out of the dish, added the chicken, returned the rest of the tomato and topped with the cheese. That went back into the oven while I cooked up some Cavolo Nero kale (allotment grown) and the resulting dish was delicious, both yesterday and reheated with some additions for today’s dinner. It is a pretty easy recipe so one I expect I’ll be trying again soon, possibly even with the mozzarella most recipes use.

Bass…eble clef

We got handed a short piece to play at tonight’s band rehearsal which was sounding rather odd from the bass chair. I figured out that, although it was written in bass clef with two flats, it needed to be read as if it was written in treble clef and landing on a Bb rather than a D. Even knowing that, it is still off-putting so I’ve written it up with Lilypond as a Bb song in the expected bass clef. Much easier!

FWIW, the song is a version of this one:

Sing-around Songs – 20 September 2025

Just two songs from me today at the sing around – I only stayed for the first half as I had to get back to pick Jane up from the station. I took the double bass and, since I was invited to kick off the session, I went with I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free. In the key of G, it suits my voice and falls out of the bass with little effort, while being energising and positive. For my second go, I had another go at Ride On. I’ve got it working better on bass than I had it on ukulele although it is going to need another go or two to pin it down.

Clip-on Specs

Over the last year or so, I have noticed a definite decline in my eyesight. I’ve been short-sighted since childhood but I’ve now reached the point where regular glasses make things a bit blurred when close-up too. Increasingly, I have to lift my glasses up to read things like the fine print on ingredient lists. It is a particularly pain when trying to read music; in a band situation, I ideally need to see both the dots, which are close to me, and the conductor, who is far away.

A good solution has turned out to be clip on lenses. They can boost close-up vision better than just lifting the glasses up and more conveniently than switching to an alternative set of reading specs. I’ve also found that, at band, I can see my music clearly but, by dint of peering over the top of the clip-ons but still through my regular lenses, I can also get a good view of the conductor when I need it mid-song.

It holds off the day when I need to switch to bifocals or varifocals. The biggest downside is that, light as they are, the clip-ons add a level of extra weight. I wouldn’t want to wear them all the time. What I’m hunting for is some half-moon clip ons, so I can get the benefits but half the weight (or perhaps just some small lenses I can 3D print a suitable clip on holder for?).

Translucent Container

Translucent Container

Jane was doing some tidying the other day and wanted my collection of corks (always a useful material to have a small supply of) moved out of the kitchen. I decided to print a container using a design I found on Makerworld.com.

The design uses ‘vase mode’, which prints each part in a single continuous layer. You sacrifice some strength but gain in terms of speed and lowering the amount of material used. I picked my recently acquired Sunlu “Translucent Orange” for the body, so I can see the contents through the walls, and Sunlu “Brass” as a complementary but opaque colour for the top.

I was also interested to find that I couldn’t mention the brand name Sunlu when posting my rating of the print on the Makerworld website. Apparently Bambulab feel that it constitutes “sensitive” information! Fortunately they haven’t prevented other brands of filament from working in their printers.

Beetroot Martini

I brought in some more polytunnel beetroot at the weekend and, needing to get it processed, ended up running it through the mandolin slicer and putting it in the dehydrator. There are plenty of things I can do with the resulting magenta powder and I don’t think I’m going to end up with more than I can use from my relatively small harvest.

However, since this batch had some fairly small roots, some of the slices were too small to fit on the dehydrator grid. I didn’t want to waste them, so I put them in a glass and added some gin and vermouth. That gives me a beetroot martini – beautiful colour and, since I love the earthy mineral flavour of beetroot, a great combination for me.

I wonder if I can also make it using the powder….?

Concentrated Tomatoes

One method for using up a glut of fruit or vegetables is to find ways to preserve them. One of the methods I’m using for tomatoes this year is to produce a concentrate that can then be frozen and pulled out to use in things like Bolognese sauce. The method I’ve followed, out of my trusty D&K preserving book, is mainly chopped up tomatoes but supplement with a few other ingredients, like some garlic, onion, celery and bay leaves. All of that gets heated up to a boil and then simmered (with frequent stirring) for an hour or so. Once cooled down, it can be pressed through a sieve to separate the thick tomato liquid from skins and seeds and that, in turn, can be frozen into portions.

It takes a certain amount of labour and energy but it reduces the size of the nutritious material by a significant amount. I’m looking forward to trying the results… but that will probably be after the supply of fresh tomatoes comes to an end.

New Gateway Required

For several years, the BibleGateway website has been my go to source for looking up verses, studying in preparation for preaching and putting links to verses I mention on this blog. You will notice there is no link in the previous paragraph. That is because, a few days ago, the website “went dark” at least for UK (and I think EU) customers. As promised, I’ve received a refund of what remains of the subscription fee I’d paid so they haven’t taken the money and run but I’m still down what had been an incredibly useful resource.

I’m not quite sure why this has happened. When I tried to look into it, some sources suggested it was down to EU data protection laws (the UK is still under the GDPR regulations) but I don’t think those have changed recently. Possibly someone realised that the service was keeping EU/UK data on US servers and that could be a problem. I also subscribe to various other US-based services but those might be large enough to maintain region specific user data servers.

Meanwhile, I need a different reference site – I think Bible Hub might step into the gap but I won’t go for a paid subscription just yet.

Still Dehydrating

Looking back, I realise it was almost four years ago that I purchased our small dehydrating oven. With gadgets like that, it is hard to guess whether they will be useful or not but it is still going strong and, with autumn’s harvests, into the busy season. I think I’ll file that purchase under “would buy again” although I’ve no idea if the particular make and model I picked up is still available. Our one continues to work just fine though and hopefully will continue that way for some time to come.
