Today I did something I don’t recall ever having done before – I called the UK emergency services on 999.

It was to report a fire. Don’t worry – nothing connected to chez moi but, driving home from the morning service at church, I spotted a tree blazing away at the edge of the Morrison’s car park. As soon as I got home (about three minutes later) I called to check it had been reported. As I expected, it had and a vehicle was already in attendance but I thought it was worth making sure.

I imagine the fire service have been rather busy these last couple of days and, although the forecast is for a significant reduction in heat by tomorrow (back to merely ‘a hot summer’s day’) there are still going to be plenty of trees and other things out there that remain tinder dry so we all need to keep alert.
