Snuffling Swans

We had a couple of swans on the canal at the end of the garden today. They came up quite close to us, probably looking for food. We didn’t feed them – there is plenty growing in the canal for them to nibble on and it probably isn’t wise to encourage them to get too trusting of humans – but we did listen.

What really struck us what how they sound not dissimilar to pigs or (hedge)hogs. They are called mute swans but they aren’t truly silent although they don’t have the glorious songs of some other birds. However, they are magnificent beasts and welcome to come and feed from our stretch of the canal any time they want.
